Smart Warehouse Tracking for Fiber Construction with Chainway R5

Background

For fiber construction companies, project readiness depends on having the right materials available at the right location before fieldwork begins. Fiber reels, equipment, and other assets often move from warehouses to yards, trucks, and job sites, passing through multiple handling and deployment stages along the way.

When tracking is incomplete, teams are often left uncertain about what is available, where it has been sent, and whether crews are fully prepared for upcoming work. To strengthen its smart warehouse solution and maintain chain of custody, a fiber construction technology provider in North America deployed Chainway R5 Wearable RFID Readers, connecting RFID data capture with mobile devices across receiving, staging, loading, and field deployment.

Challenge

As materials moved beyond the primary warehouse, maintaining continuous visibility across yards, trucks, and job sites presented several operational hurdles.

Slow Material Identification
Fiber reels, tools, and equipment were distributed across warehouses, yards, loading areas, trucks, and job sites, making fast inventory checks and item searches difficult.

Disrupted Handling Workflows
Workers frequently needed both hands to move reels and equipment, so repeatedly picking up and putting down a handheld device could slow receiving, staging, loading, and handover tasks.

Delayed Material Visibility
Manual records and disconnected workflows made it harder for teams to review current quantities, locations, and movement information across different sites.

Demanding Work Environments
Operations extended across indoor warehouses, outdoor yards, vehicles, and active job sites, where dust, frequent movement, long working hours, and accidental drops were common.

Solution

The company deployed Chainway R5 Wearable RFID Readers, connecting them with mobile devices and its smart warehouse management system to capture material data across receiving, staging, loading, and field deployment.

Reliable RFID Performance for Faster Material Identification
Built with Impinj E family reader ICs and Gen2X support, the R5 delivers reliable UHF RFID performance. A read range of up to 14 meters and a read rate of over 900 tags per second help workers quickly identify tagged reels, tools, and equipment across warehouses, yards, and loading areas.

Wearable Design for Hands-Free Material Handling
Various wearable options allow workers to keep their hands available while moving reels and equipment. This makes RFID data capture easier to integrate into receiving, staging, loading, and handover workflows without adding frequent device-handling steps.

Seamless Integration for Real-Time Material Visibility
Through Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0, the Chainway R5 transfers RFID data to paired devices. With Android and iOS SDK support, the reader can be integrated with the company’s mobile application and inventory management system, allowing teams to easily review updated material quantities, locations, and movement records.

Rugged, Long-Lasting Performance Across Work Environments
A removable 2000 mAh battery supports extended daily operation, while IP65 sealing and 1.5-meter drop resistance help the R5 withstand frequent use across warehouses, yards, trucks, and job sites.

Result

By integrating Chainway R5 Wearable RFID Readers into its inventory management system, the company established a more consistent material-tracking workflow from receiving through field deployment. Teams can identify tagged reels, tools, and equipment more efficiently and review updated quantities, locations, and movement records across warehouses, yards, trucks, and job sites.

The wearable design also makes data capture easier to incorporate into material-handling tasks, while mobile integration supports faster handovers and earlier verification before crews leave for the field. As a result, the solution helps reduce time spent searching for materials, improve inventory accountability, strengthen crew readiness, and keep fiber construction projects moving with fewer avoidable delays.
